Little Daisy Belmont
This is a rarity for me, a purely instrumental piece. It has no lyrics and so I guess it doesn't qualify as a song. It sings to me though.
Mike Seeger recorded this on his 'Sourthern Banjo Styles' Volume 2 and on 'Animal Folksongs for Children'. He learned it from the playing of Dee Hick on 'Ballads and Banjo Music of the Cumberland Plateau", County 789. As far as I know that's the whole history of the piece. It is pretty easy to play in the odd tuning of f#DEAD when you get the knack of the harmonics. Then you can close your eyes and play it for hours imagining the geese flying across an autumn sky.
