Raccoon Songs

Peggy Seeger - back when I learned these songs.

Here are two songs that I learned from a Peggy Seeger album that I had when I was around fourteen years old. Back then I was in love with Peggy Seeger. She was in her twenties, quite pretty and wow could she play the banjo. My ideal. I'm still a big fan and grateful she is still with us and going strong.

I thought these two songs would go well together. Unfortunately I left out one of the best verses. You will find it in the lyrics.

The Squirrel

Peggy today

The Squirrel is a pretty thing carries a pretty tail
He steals all the farmers corn and husks it on the rail

The partridge is pretty little bird carries a speckled breast
She steals away the framer grain and carries it to her next

The hawk he is a scheming bird schemes all around the sky
He schemes into my chicken house and makes my roost hens fly

The raccoon is a mighty man, rambles in the dark
You ought to see him hunt his den, when he hears my little dog bark

Raccoon Got a Ring Anound Tail

Raccoon’s get a ring around tail; possum tail goes bare
Rabbit’s got no tail at all just a little old hunk of hair

Raccoon and the possum racking cross the prairie
Raccoon says to the possum, honey, don’t you want to marry

Don’t you see that pretty little girl, sittin’ under the moon
Somethin’ bound to happen if the preacher don’t come soon

I met that Raccoon in the road, Raccoon where ya gwine
Look out man don’t bother me I’m huntin’ muskidine

I met the possum in the road, possum where ya gwine
He lowed it was his business and it sure weren’t none of mine

I met that rabbit in the road, rabbit where ya gwine
Look out man don’t bother me the old grey hound’s behind

There’s a thousand verses to this song. I hope I sung em well
Before I’d sing ‘em all again I’d see you all in . . . well . . .

Raccoon’s get a ring around tail; possum tail goes bare
Rabbit’s got no tail at all just a little old hunk of hair
